Program Information

58th Annual STS (1998–1999)
Finalists
Dorimar Morales

Dorimar MoralesDorimar Morales, 17, of Carolina, entered an ecology project in the Intel Science Talent Search. She investigated differences in size, population and fecundity between Aratus pisonii crabs collected from two mangrove ecosystems in Puerto Rico's northern and southern regions. Dorimar found that crabs from the northern mangrove are larger and produce more eggs than those living in the south. She attributes these differences to greater pollution, human intrusion and cooler air and water in the southern region. First in her class at Colegio Maria Auxiliadora High School, Dorimar is Science Club president, Oratory Club vice-president and a Student Council member. A Gold Medalist at local track and field competitions, her school named her Athlete of the Year in 1996 and 1997. She has won first place and grand prize honors in 12 consecutive school science fairs, three consecutive grand prizes at Regional Science Fairs and represented Puerto Rico at International Science and Engineering Fairs in Canada, Arizona and Texas. The daughter of Angel Morales and Migdalia Torres, Dorimar plans on studying aerospace engineering at MIT.
